Dog owners often find mysterious objects in their pets’ beds, from stolen socks to treats. But Duke, a nine-year-old golden retriever who was adopted 18 months ago, has taken his collecting habit to a whole new level. His new family has released an adorable video showing the unusual items he brings to his bed, and the story behind it has left many heartbroken.
A lamp, a laptop, porcelain mugs and even framed pictures – it seems that nothing is off limits for Duke. The video initially made viewers laugh, but everything changed when his owner Cathy explained to The Dodo why he does it.
Before Cathy and her husband adopted him, Duke was frequently moved from one home to another by his family, which meant he never had stability and lost the toys and trinkets he held dear. His strange behavior is actually an attempt to preserve the things he cares about, reports PetHelpful .
His new owner is extremely patient and understanding, allowing him to keep his “treasure,” at least for a while. While sleeping with a china teapot may not be the safest option, Duke has finally found a permanent home where he feels safe.
Sweet reactions from the internet
The video has garnered more than five million views and seven thousand comments, with many sharing their enthusiasm and similar experiences.
A particularly notable comment was from user @rjtulve, who shared a similar story: “This is so touching! We have a foster goldendoodle who has been with us for 2.5 years. In the first two years, he was constantly accumulating things and putting them in his ‘nest’. Things like cutlery, kitchen utensils, shoes (he still loves shoes), food items, bottles of wine, hats…”
“After 2.5 years, he’s finally settled down. But he loves helping me when I get home from work. He brings in my blender bottle, my jewelry box, and practically takes the shoes I’m wearing off my feet, and leaves them in front of the upstairs closet.”
